Painless

Sorry its been a while since last post. Life can be so busy. Sam is Sam. We have been taking her all over with her friends so she can have her life as normal as possible. She is taking full advantage of our hospitality. We would have it no other way.  Sam continues to have little miracles happening almost every week. Her left hand is moving more and she told me the feeling in her little finger on the left hand is returning. She also told us she can feel down to her hips. She thought she pulled a muscle. The UofU checked her out and gave her a clean bill of health.  Still no leg movement but during a shower she told me she can feel the pressure of the water on her feet. Sam has been amazing. I can tell when she is fighting not to be in a bad mood. We talk to her a lot about attitude being a big factor in recovery. She is such a strong girl. Oh! the pain in her neck is almost completely gone. She can articulate her head pretty well. She moves around in bed during the night too. Being able to move around helps her skin stay healthy.  She doesn't let us watch in therapy much but when I do sneak a look they have her doing all sorts of things. I told her to hurry up and transfer herself so my back will last a few more years. Sam has transferred herself to bed-chair, chair-bed a few times but needs to be stronger so we don't have to be there with her. Is she doing great or what!  A couple weeks ago our area 70, Elder Leavitt visited Sam after speaking in our ward.  Our former stake president came with him.  The feeling in the house felt so warm.  I believe we usually have a good feeling in our home but this was extra special.  He spoke with Sam, he cried with Sam.  He genuinely wanted to get to know Sam.  Of course its Sam and he had to extract every ounce of information from her. Sam is very private but was very gracious with him. He is attempting to have her correspond with her weekly.  Having the priesthood bless our home and daughter is tremendous. My best birthday gift was Sam's kiss on my cheek today.  Those don't come very often, but I got one. Our community keeps amazing us all the time. We are so lucky to live where we do.  We may be having some company for a while. Sam asked us to offer our home to a young man who is going through therapy with her. He was ejected from a vehicle and broke his 5-6 cervical.  She told us he had to be at the U.  He is starting to move his hands and knows his best shot at rehab is the U. Of course we could not hold the offer back. We gave his dad the offer and he is going to talk with his wife.  They live in St George and it would help them out a lot.  Thanks for the prayers, keep them coming. Love you all.

Thanksgiving

I'm sitting here looking at Sam's picture on the front of the Deseret News.  Amy Donaldson, a sports writer did an article on our Sam.  I appreciate her sharing Sam's story in newspaper format.  I know more prayers  will be said in her behalf and that is still what she needs the most. Its been quite crazy at home.  Sam decided she would continue her lifestyle before the accident and my back can attest to that. I did tell Sam I would take her wherever she wanted so she can have a "normal" life. She is going to kill me.  Movies every weekend or the mall every other day.  Other than that life is good.  Sam continues to make progress and we are happy for that. Her strength is continuing to get better and she transferred herself again from bed to chair at therapy. My sister and neice from Louisiana have been visiting for the past few days. My sister could not believe how good she is doing. She hasn't seen her since the week of the accident.  She was amazed how far she has come. Its awesome to have so many family and friends accross the country thinging of my Sam. Today I am so grateful for four girls in our community that can have Thanksgiving with their families today. I am so thankful for Sam's great friends who keep her spirits up.  I can't believe how much time these girls spend with Sam.  They can't imagine how just sitting with her and keeping her updated on school and community keeps her going. I am thankful for the UofU and the great therapist that light up when Sam gets there. I am thankful for a wife who...keeps me on the right track and tells me how much I am needed. I am thankful for a great community of Nephi that keeps giving to us everyday.  I am thankful for my knowledge of the purpose of life. I could not get through this time without it. Sam's doing great.  Please remember her and all the others who need our prayers today.  Be thankful for what you have.  Be thankful for those you look at accross the table today.

Deseret News

I wanted to let everyone know that Sam will be featured in the Deseret News tomorrow! The article is titled, "Catching Hope" and I assume it will be in the sports section. If you don't receive the print version it will be online as well! I will try to post a link tomorrow.

LONG Overdue Post!

Sorry I have not posted in such a long time. Life is just busy! Sam is doing well. She has been home for a little over two weeks. It has definitely been an adjustment, but overall things have been good. She likes being in her own space and being close to her friends. Her friends have been absolutely wonderful! They visit frequently and make sure to include her in their fun. Last weekend her friend Nicole asked her on a Sadie's date :) They had a lot of fun!
There have been some hard times. I think being in her normal environment, but with everything different has been a challenge. But, she continues to have a great attitude the majority of the time. She had a difficult day this week. She had a break down and my gave her a little pep talk. She quickly got into a better mood. I know it is so hard, but she is really trying to be upbeat about everything.
Yesterday she had a great day! She was at therapy at the U and she transferred herself from the bed to the wheelchair independently! Sam said that my mom and her therapist cried. I asked if she cried and she said (sarcastically as usual), "No, I was tough and held it in." Then she also was able to throw a ball about 15 feet. She hasn't been able to throw because she couldn't get her fingers to open to release the ball. She was really excited about this! She told me it really was a great day!
I am so thankful that our Heavenly Father continues to be with her. She had a difficult day and then the next day was one of her best! He is always there if we will just ask for his help. Sam is such an example to me of faith. She is able to have a great attitude because of her great outlook on things. I am so proud of the amazing girl that she is proving to be.
I will try to be better at updating! Please keep the prayers coming-she still has a long way to go!

Back home again

We've been home a little more than a week.  Sure was nice to sleep in my own bed and eat a home cooked meal. Sam has been doing great.  I think not having someone come into your room at all hours of the night helps you to sleep better. We had a few days without therapy but now we're taking Sam on Mondays and Fridays to Mountain View Hospital where I work.  The therapist is awesome and is really excited to work with Sam.  The other three days during the week are spent at the Uof U in outpatient therapy. They haven't cut her any slack.  I love it when they work her hard and are excited about the progress they see. They were so amazed Sam was doing her own makeup.  Sam's friends have continued to be great but, I'm not liking traveling around with them so I can transfer Sam in and out of the truck. I guess I will call it additional therapy if its doing her good.  Sam's ramp in the front of the house has a new rail around it courtesy of Horizon Metals in Nephi.  A couple fine young gentlemen did the work and Horizon paid for the parts.  Everyone has been so gracious helping our Sam.  We thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts.

She's Home!!!

Sam came home on Tuesday. She left the hospital around 11:30-she was so happy to leave that place! She will continue to go there for therapy three times a week, but at least she doesn't have to stay! Sam's friends, the young women, and my mom's friends decorated the house and Sam's friends put a sign on the Nephi exit. My mom said that when Sam saw all of the signs she cried. It made me cry to see them too! I am just so happy that she is home. All of Sam's friends were there to welcome her home-I know they were all happy to see each other. She loves her new bedroom and bathroom. Everything looks so great! We are so appreciative to all of the amazing people who helped with the bathroom remodel. People are so generous and we continue to be blown away with all of the love shown for Sam and our family.
Sam's first day home she had a bunch of friends come visit and then her and my mom went to the volleyball game. Juab was playing Spanish Fork so Sam was able to see her friends from both teams. She seemed to have a lot of fun. Her first day home went so well. She really seemed so happy to be home.
She has a week off of therapy which will be nice so she can adjust to being home. Then, she starts up again next week. The plan is three days at the University of Utah Hospital and two days in Payson or Nephi (we are hoping Nephi will be covered with insurance so she won't have to go all the way to Payson on her days off of Salt Lake). She is doing well so far at home. She seems a little down today, but overall she is as amazing as ever. We love her so much and are so thankful that she can be home now. Please continue to keep her in your prayers-she still has a long way to go. Thanks to everyone for making her homecoming so special!

Overdue Update

I am so behind on updating! Sam has had a couple of really good weeks. She is progressing more and more every day. Last week for her outing we went to Gardner Village to see the witches. We had such a great time! That day was the first time that Sam used her manual wheelchair outside. She did so well! I was so proud of her. Gardner Village is not the most wheelchair accessible, but she really coped well. One store had a really narrow ramp, but her therapists wanted her to go up it. It took a couple of tries, but she was able to do it. I know she was frustrated, but I was happy with how she handled it. Once we moved on to the next store she was over it and was happy again. She got the cutest bed set at The Quilt Shop. She can't wait to see it in her new bedroom!
This week Sam got to go to City Creek with her friend, Maddi. My mom was able to take Sam in the truck and do all of the transfers by herself! They had a fun time. Sam got dressed up and put make-up on for the first time since the accident! She looked so cute! She even did most of her make-up by herself and my dad finished up.
Sam is starting to have more sensation and movement. She is able to move all of the fingers in both of her hands. She still has numbness in specific places on her arms and hands, but the movement is really improving. She also has some sensation behind her thighs. I am with Sam right now and I asked her what her newest trick is. She said, "I can move all of the fingers in my left hand and I can give a thumbs up." The doctor told her that he is really pleased with how well she is doing and that she is much further than he thought she would be at this point. She is going home on Tuesday! She is pretty excited to get home and see her new room and bathroom and to be able to spend more time with her friends. She will continue to have therapy at the U Hospital three times a week.
Her attitude continues to be amazing! I have been with her all afternoon and we have had the best time! She just makes me laugh. My mom told me a story and I wanted to share it. It just shows how wonderful my cute sister is. There is a little boy that Sam sees frequently in the hospital. He is eight years old and had a spinal cord injury. His is higher up and the cord was completely severed. Sam feels so bad for the little boy. Last week she said to my mom, "We really need to fast and pray for that little boy." Sam has so far to go herself and the fact that she is wanting to fast and pray for someone else just blows me away. She is a pretty fantastic girl!

I am planning on going to Nephi with her this week so I will update soon about how the transition goes! Thanks so much to everyone for the continued prayers and support. We appreciate it so much and love you all!

Post season

A couple nights ago when I stayed over with Sam, we decided we would go to the dayroom they have for patients and watch the Yankees play. Sam was in a good mood so I told her I would buy her dinner from the cafeteria.  On the way, Sam thought she needed to see how fast her electric wheelchair would go. 5 and a half miles per hour. I was impressed and also thankful that the Doc a couple days later decided she needed a manual wheelchair. We bought a huge deli sandwich and chips. Luckily no one was using the big screen tv, so we switched it to the Yankees.  Samantha devowered her half of the sandwich.  We sat there and stuffed our faces with as much candy as possible.  I can't remember if the Yanks won or lost but I do remember Sam saying she could probably eat the rest of the sandwich after all we had. I'm glad her appetite is back.  We went back to her room and watched the food network until it was time for bed. Sam's left hand thumb has begun to function. The left side is slower rehabing but, its coming.  She is also starting to feel more sensation in different parts of her body.  My bishop was up the other day to watch some of her therapy. He is also a physical therapist down in Nephi and was interested in the U's therapy.  He was also checking on Sam and the family. Her spirit and attitude have been great. We appreciate all the prayers, food, gifts, and love.

Sam's Fund Run!

Monday night was Sam's Fund Run! It was such an amazing event! Right after the accident my mom told her friends that she did not want them to do a run or any type of fundraiser. But, luckily they convinced her it was a good idea! It was definitely a wonderful night. When they first decided to do the race I hoped that a couple of hundred people would come. We ended up having over 600 people come! I just could not believe the amount of support showed to our family and Sam. Seeing all of those people take time out of their busy lives to run in Sam's behalf was just overwhelming.

The night was so much fun! Everything was so organized-it was one of the most organized races I have ever been too! In addition to the race there was a raffle with many great prizes, a hot dog dinner, and a bake sale. It was seriously the best! My mom seriously has the most fantastic friends. They are so giving and so talented. We just love and appreciate them so much! Thanks so much to them and to everyone who came and made it a wonderful night!

FUN!

Today with Sam was so much fun! For her activity away from the hospital we went to City Creek. Sam had not been yet so I was excited for her to get to today. She loved it! She was in great spirits and we had fun looking in a few stores. She jokingly said to me, "I broke my neck so I can get whatever I want!" I told her that if she is saying that she better head to Tiffany and Co. So, we headed that way because if you are there you have to check out the bling! My aunt Bobbie sent Sam some money and told her to buy something for herself with it. So, Sam did some shopping and ended up getting a bracelet at Tiffany's! It is so pretty and she just absolutely loves it! It was honestly so much fun watching her get excited about something. She tried on several different necklaces and bracelets and we were in there for a while. She finally decided on a bracelet with an infinity charm in the middle. It is beautiful! I must admit I am a little jealous she has that little blue box!
She is doing so well this week! She has started learning how to use a manual wheelchair. She did so well in the first session with it that her therapist ordered Sam's own chair so she will have it when she goes home. Sam said she wanted to go home with a manual chair and she has worked hard and it is going to happen! I am so proud of how hard she works everyday. Her strength and determination are most definitely in her favor throughout all of this.
She is also doing really well with her hand and arm movement. Her finger movement in her right is really so great. Her left is slower, but it is definitely improving. She is able to feed herself and I think that has helped her want to eat more. She is also starting to get an appetite back. She was craving a soft pretzel today, but City Creek doesn't have a pretzel place. So, after our shopping I headed to Fashion Place and got her some pretzel bites with cheese. She ate almost all of it!
Her lower body continues to be slow, but she has started feeling some tingling behind her right leg. She is also able to feel more in her abdomen. She has just felt pressure, but she is feeling more specific touch.
Thank you all again for your continued love and support. When this first happened and we felt the power of prayer so strongly, my mom said, "What if people stop praying?" I am so thankful that we have such an amazing support system who hasn't stopped! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I receive messages frequently saying Sam is being prayed for and we continue to feel those prayers.
My mom's amazing running friends have organized a 5k which is this coming Monday! I am so excited for it. Around 500 people have registered which is just incredible to me! Thank you to those who organized it and to all who are participating! We will see you all on Monday!
Sam with her new bracelet!

The little blue bag!

This was from last week at Jackson's superhero party! I made everyone take a picture with the weight. Sam said, "It is actually kind of heavy for me." But then she lifted it and did a few curls with it! So strong :)

Rapid Progress

On Friday Dr. Rosenbluth came to see Sam. He sees her everyday, but he hasn't done a full assessment for a long time. Friday he did and he was so happy with how she is doing. He looked at my mom and said, "That is progress. Actually that is rapid progress." She is really doing so amazingly well! Her arm and hand movement is so much better. When she got to the U they rated all of her muscles on a 0-5 scale. Her right tricep was 0.5 and her left was trace. Now her right is a 3.5 and her left is a 3. Because her arm strength has improved so much they are going to start teaching her how to use a manual wheelchair! A few weeks ago she said she wanted to go home with a manual chair. I honestly did not think it was possible. But, here she is proving everyone wrong again! She is so amazing!
She is getting so much more independent. She can feed herself most things and can hold her mug to take a drink. She is most happy that she can scratch her face by herself. They are starting to teach her how to dress herself as well.
Last Wednesday we were supposed to go to City Creek, but they decided to do some type of test that day so she couldn't leave for that long. Instead, we went to Foothill Village for a little while. She did so well. My mom said she was pretty somber when leaving the hospital, but by the time we met up with her at the shopping center she was in a good mood. This was her first time outside of a hospital since the accident. She was able to independently maneuver her chair through all of the stores we went to. Her occupational therapist had her practice different things in the stores like opening a lotion bottle, taking a shirt off the rack, etc. Jackson has some popcorn and Sam wanted some. She was able to pick it up out of my hand and feed it to herself. I was just so impressed with how well she did. It was a fun outing. This week we are for sure going to City Creek so we are looking forward to that!
We have again been overwhelmed by the support people have shown. Sam's 5k is next week and 200 people have registered (there is still time to register if you haven't)! The high school had a dance for her and raised over $3000. During a football game the Spanish Fork fans donated over $1200. So many things have been done and we can't thank you all enough. My mom hates that she can't thank everyone individually, but please know we appreciate it so so so much!
Yesterday at church one of my Young Women gave a talk about faith. It really touched me and made me realize how much my faith has been tested and grown the last six weeks. Shortly after the accident I was reading Moroni 7. Verse 42 says, "Wherefore, if a man have faith he must needs have hope; for without faith there cannot be any hope." I have had to remind myself of this principle throughout this trial. Probably because I am a nurse I can be very skeptical about recovery expectations. But, I remind myself to have hope and faith and to believe that anything can  happen for Samantha. Already she is doing so much more than were were originally told she would be. I learned an important lesson earlier this year that Heavenly Father can make anything happen. I know this is pretty basic knowledge, but I had an experience that really made this evident to me. If we don't hope for the best for Sam how can we expect it to happen? We have to hope and pray for the best and then be willing to accept whatever happens. I am so happy with the "rapid progress" Sam has made and I can't wait to see what else she accomplishes!

Sam has been kicking it lately!  She has been eating and drinking better.  Her attitude has been excellent.  Sam's cough is getting pretty close to normal. Its really enjoyable to sleep through the night when I stay with her. The other night she spent a couple of hours on facebook, without assistance from anyone, and did some texting.  Last night she had a Yankees' game on the iPad and the food network on the tv.  She also had dinner from Cafe Rio.  I've  always known Sam could do anything but she is always surprising me. I think as she sees herself getting better it motivates her to do even more. We are impatient parents and Sam has acquired that trait. She wants to be better now, but she is also realistic. She lets us know how she wants her treatments to go. A few days ago therapy took her up to the Huntsman Cancer Institute for lunch. They have two great restaurants on the top floor everyone needs to try. Sam fed herself lunch. She even held her own glass as she drank her juice. She thought it was great to get out of the hospital for a little while. Last weekend I grilled some steaks in the patio area of the hospital while we watched LSU. Sam really enjoyed that day. Today they are taking her to the City Creek Center.  They want her to do at least one thing away from the hospital each week. She gets around well in her electric wheelchair but told me she wants a manual wheelchair so she can keep improving her strength.  Shes incredible.  I want to thank everyone who visits her. It lifts her spirits so much. For me,  I appreciate our friends who just listen to us vent our frustrations with this situation. Its been great therapy for us.  We have such awesome friends and family. Keep praying for my Sam. We love you all.

Sorry it has been so long since an update! Life is so busy and I just haven't had the time to update. Sam has had a great week. Last weekend some of her friends came up to visit to celebrate homecoming. They stayed for a long visit and Sam had such a great time with them! We are always so thankful when her friends come and make her happy. That night my parents and my little family joined Sam to watch the BYU/UTAH game. It was a lot of fun! Sam even had a bite of pizza that night. And the best part of the night is that UTAH WON!!! (Sam really doesn't care that much, but I do and I am updating so I get to be excited about it :) Sam had a lot of other visitors Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and she just really loves that-so thanks to everyone who comes to visit! We know it isn't convenient, but it means so much to all of us.
I spent some time with Sam today and she is just amazing! She is getting more independent every day. Her arm movement is really great. She is so much more controlled and strong  in her arm movement. She is able to drive her wheelchair independently. The last couple of days she has fed herself breakfast and can hold a cup and give herself a drink of water. She even put her deodorant on by herself! She really is improving so much each day.
Janel, one of the case managers, said to my mom, "Sam is taking this to the next level. She is amazing!" We have to agree. She is working so hard and has such an amazing attitude. Anyone who has visited knows how good her attitude is. She is able to joke and really just be herself. She is so selfless. My dad has been working all week so my mom has stayed the night (she usually does, but my dad is usually here to take a turn as well). Sam asked my mom when my dad was coming back up and when my mom said Friday, Sam said, "Good. You really need a good night sleep." She is just so kind and thoughtful.
My dad talked about the newspaper journalist in his last post. Amy Donaldson, a prep sports writer, met with Sam on Tuesday. Sam said she was really great. She did a very in-depth interview with Sam about everything from the accident to her recovery. They took lots of pictures of Sam in her room and at therapy. We don't know when the story will be in the paper, but I will let you know when we know! Sam is truly an inspiration and I hope that her story can touch the lives of many.
We continue to be amazed at the many miracles happening in Sam's behalf. It seems that every day there is something new that has happened that can only be explained as a miracle. I am so thankful to know of the atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I know that not only did he suffer for our sins, but our pain and trials as well. I know that he has felt the pain and frustration that Sam is feeling and that with his help she can overcome anything. I am so thankful for him. Please continue to keep Sam in your prayers. She is doing so well, but still has a long way to go!
Now, here are a few pictures from last weekend! (I should probably mention I stole these pictures from Sam's friends Facebook pages! But, Sam wanted me to so I figure they will be okay with that!)

One Month

It has been one month today since the accident. It is amazing to me how one instant can change a life forever. I have experienced so many things in the last month that I never knew I could or would. It still seems so fresh that I truly cannot believe it has been an entire month. Our family has been through an unimaginably difficult time, but we have been so extremely blessed. Our relationships with each other have been strengthened. I already loved my family so much, but that love has just grown. We have learned to rely more fully on our Heavenly Father. I have never prayed so much and felt my prayers answered as I have this past month. I have never felt others prayers as I have this month. My mom and I talked about how we literally feel a cocoon of warmth and strength and we know this is directly from the prayers of others given in our behalf. I have learned so much from my amazing sister, Sam. I knew she was a great person, but I had no idea how much strength-physical, emotional, and spiritual-she really had. She continues to amaze me with her positive outlook. She is not angry or bitter and just wants to work hard to get better. My mom said the other morning she was getting mad because the nurses hadn't come to get her ready for the day. "I have to be ready before 9 so I can start therapy on time!" she said. She really is so committed. I am so thankful to her for making this entire experience so much easier on all of us. My mom told me that she feels like she is forever changed from this experience and I completely agree. I have been changed and I have learned so much.
We have been so grateful for all of the love and support given to our family. We are overwhelmed with all that has been done. We are truly blessed to have the support of such a wonderful community-you have all made our burden lighter.
Now, for an update on Sam. She is doing really well. Dr. Rosenbluth told my dad the other day that he is so happy with the progress she has made. He said others in her same situation are generally not doing as much as she is. The other day she scratched her nose by herself and Dr. Rosenbluth said, "Next she'll be picking it!"  Her arm movement is greatly improving and her triceps are getting stronger. With the help of some aids she is able to use her iPad and she even wrote her name yesterday! She got her new iPhone and she is so excited to start learning how to use it. She has some sensation in her legs, but still no voluntary movement. Her throat is feeling so much better and she has been able to eat more this last week. The progress is so slow with this type of injury, but when I compare her movement to one month ago she has come so far!
It is homecoming week in Nephi and Sam was voted Homecoming Queen! We are excited, but she is embarrassed. Sam never likes to be the center of attention, but I know she is still appreciative of people thinking of her. Some of her friends are going to come up the night of the dance and have a party with her. Speaking of friends, we are so thankful for Sam's friends. She loves them so much and they have been so supportive. She is so happy when her friends come to visit-it really makes her whole day.
Please continue to keep the prayers coming! She still has so far to go, but she can do it!

Thursday, September 13, 2012

What a difference a couple days can make. Sam has been feeling really good the last couple of days. The docs have cut her back on one medication and doubled her pain meds before therapy and she has just been a different person. She has been sleeping very well at night. Even I have gotten some sleep at night.  Today I fed her a grilled cheese sandwich with green beans. She also had some wheat thins with cheese whiz, Jordan almonds, and a Slurpee. Needless to say her throat is feeling better. Last night Sam was selected Homecoming queen. She was a little embarrassed but wishes she could be at the game. She is always so appreciative for her friends. A reporter from the Tribune wants to do an article on Sam. Sam rolled her eyes at that idea but was very nice about it. The hospital has dogs (therapy pets) that go around to help the patients feel better. Yesterday the dog jumped on Sam's lap and was licking her face and there was nothing she could do about it. Today the dog prayed for her and even said Amen! Sam has just blown us away at how gracious she is under the circumstances. She is always so polite to everyone trying to help her. Sam's therapist and doctor says she is doing great and that some people with this type of injury can't even sit in a wheelchair at this point in Sam's progression. She wrote her name today, she said I did it but man was it ugly. Last night Sam and I watched a scary movie. At one of the scary parts Sam yelled at me to come and cover her eyes. We laughed about that one.  It sure picks our spirits up when she feels so good.  We are trying to do everything to help her stay positive. Thanks to all who visit and lift her spirits. Keep praying! Its working! Love you all.

Shake it for Sam!

Shake it for Sam was Thursday and it was amazing! A good friend of our family, Marci Blackett Rasch, organized this event. We had a black light Zumba party, a silent auction, and a bake sale. Over $3000 was raised! It was so much fun! I was worried that not a lot of people would come, but as I drove up I was amazed at how many people were already there. And people just kept coming! We had a full gym of people shakin' it for Sam! So many people donated prizes. I am just so overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone's kindness and generosity! It was such an amazing night and I was just so happy that so many people were there supporting my sister.
We were able to skype for a little bit with Sam and she was amazed! Earlier that day she had had a hard time wanting to eat. My mom gave her a little talk about needing to eat. Then she watched everyone dancing for her and my mom said it seemed to just give her the boost she needed. She ate the most food at one time that she has since the accident! I think we all tell her that she has a lot of support, but actually being able to see the support really boosted her spirits!

The whole group! I showed Sam this picture last night and she said, "Who are all of those people?" I told her it was everyone who came. She was in awe! She couldn't believe there were so many people there!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all these people listed! And everyone who came!

Our Fabulous Instructors!

Thanks so much to everyone involved with this amazing event! We cannot thank you enough!

Sam had the filter in her inferior vena cava taken out this morning.  The threat of clots has been greatly reduced by the passage of time and if you leave it in too long it will . It took less than an hour and she was back in her room watching Criminal Minds.  She ate very well this morning.  Sam says she can't wait until she can just chug an apple beer.  Sam's cousin from Louisiana got here earlier this morning to visit. She should know how loved she is from all over the U.S..  Sam has been in a very good mood today.  She has had to do her therapy from bed today but everyone has been so nice but still working her out enough that she gets sore. .  She updated her facebook by herself and they had her use the phone and ipad with her assistive devices.  Last night was the Shake it for Sam, Zumba.  I heard it went well.  I am sure Mariah will post an update on that soon. Sam sends thanks for all the cards and letters she gets.

A Good Weekend

Sam has been doing really well. She had a great weekend! She doesn't have as much therapy on the weekends so she is able to relax and get some needed rest. She had a bunch of her friends come up on Saturday and Sunday and it made her so happy! She loves her friends and being with them really puts her in a good mood. We are so grateful for her friends!
On Friday the doctor and all of the therapists met with Sam and my parents for a conference (I had to work so I didn't go). My mom said it went really well. They are happy with the progress she has made so far. They still have no idea how much function she will regain, but they are hopeful that she can still make a lot of progress. The doctor said there is a bike that pedals your legs and really works the muscles so that when she gets use of her legs they are still strong and ready to be used. It is really expensive, but they are going to look into grants and using the money from the fundraisers and donations from everyone.
In my last post I asked you to pray for her throat and prayers were answered again. Her throat started feeling much better. It is still hard for her to swallow, but not as bad as before. She has been eating a little bit and is getting better every day. So, thank you for the prayers! It is pretty amazing to see the power of so many combined prayers. I truly know that when we sincerely pray our prayers will be answered.
My mom said Sam had a great day today. Her therapy was really intense, but she did well. She was even able to use her iPad a little bit today! They have an attachment that goes on her hand and allows her to swipe the screen. I am sure it will take practice to do all she wants to, but it is a start!
Her arm and hand movement really seems to be improving. It is so slow and small, but when compared to where she was a couple of weeks ago she really has come a long way. Her triceps are still really weak so that makes it difficult to do certain arm movements. She still has no movement of her lower body, but she has had more sensation. Multiple times last week she would ask my mom to take her blankets off of her feet because they were hot. And last night the nurse said she had some sensation during her bowel care. These all seem to be good signs and we just hope and pray that the improvements keep happening.
Sam continues to have an amazing attitude. We all knew she was an awesome person, but we had no idea how truly strong she is. She is not angry or bitter at all, which is just amazing to me. She even jokes about her situation. I know she will have hard days and will have breakdowns, but I am so proud of how she is handling everything.
We are so grateful for the continued prayers and support. We honestly feel the power of prayers at all times. It feels like we are just surrounded by love and concern. Please continue to keep Sam in your prayers, especially that her triceps and hands can regain function so she can start to be more independent. Thank you all so much!

Update

Sorry I haven't updated for a while. It has been a busy week. I was able to spend all day Tuesday with Sam. It was quite a day. She had assessments by occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and the doctor did his own assessment as well. It was a busy, hard day. One of the worst parts of the day is when she takes her medications. Her throat has some inflammation and it is still really sore. So, they give her liquid meds, but they taste terrible. I think it also makes her anxious to take meds because she is worried she is going to choke. It is terrible, but I know it will get better. After physical therapy she just cried and said, "It is just so hard." It broke my heart. They also put her into a wheelchair for the first time this day. I think that it was emotionally hard for her. She only stayed in it for a few minutes and then wanted to get out.
She had a rough night that night, but since then has been doing much better. Yesterday and today have been really good. She is SO busy! She gets a schedule every day and has therapy from 8am until 4 pm with an hour break for lunch. Today she was mostly in the gym for her therapy. She was in the wheelchair most of the day and my mom said she even drove it a little bit (they have an attachment on the joystick that she is able to control).
Her attitude continues to be amazing. My mom said she woke up about 5:30 this morning and just wanted to chat. She was laughing and joking with my mom. She was singing along to a song on CMT and her voice was raspy and she said, "Geez, I can't even sing good!" and then laughed at herself.  It is so amazing to me that she can be in such a difficult position, but is still able to laugh and be kind. She really is so amazingly strong. When I got here today she was exhausted from therapy, but was still happy and so cute with my boys. She is so great.
We are really happy to be at the U. She has amazing people caring for her. Dr. Rosenbluth is her doctor and he is amazing. He is so positive and kind and encouraging. Her main physical therapist is Aaron and he is great. He is so confident and competent in his job. Sam really loves him and I think that makes her want to work harder. Everyone has been really great and we are so thankful to be where she is receiving the best possible care.
Thank you again for all of your love and support. My mom and I were talking about how amazing everyone has been. My mom said, "How can I ever repay everyone? I just want to rent a billboard and put a huge THANK YOU on it." Obviously we can never repay all of you, but please know all you are doing is not going unnoticed. We can't even talk about it without crying. We are so blessed to be surrounded by such a huge group of loving friends and family.
Please continue to keep Sam in your prayers-especially that she can continue to have a good attitude and that her throat can heal so she can eat more and take her meds more easily. Thanks again! Love you all!

A night at the U

I got back to Sams room just as they were fitting a wheelchair to her. She was worked over pretty good by the physical therapist.  They wanted to take her down to the gym but, she was just totally exhausted.  They put her back into bed so she could visit with family.  Mariah and the boys had visited most of the day and Alex visited later during the night. Sam was in pretty good spirits but was just really tired. I stayed with Sam last night in her room and Jill slept at the apartment. The night was kinda rough. Sam feels there is something stuck in her throat and could not get it to come out or dislodge, even with help from the respiratory therapist. I will talk with the MD today and see if they can scope her throat.  Please remember Sam in your prayers.

Progress

I was able to spend last night with Sam. Around bedtime she had a visit from her good friend Megan. She is so blessed to have good friends. She just lights up when her friends are here. After Megan left she was in a great mood! We stayed up and talked and laughed and watched Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Her night was okay. Her night was okay. They want her to wear the bipap when she sleeps, but it is really uncomfortable and the respiratory therapist was having a hard time getting the fit right.
This afternoon Kellsi and Kaitlin brought a bunch of cards. Kaitlin opened one and Sam told her that she wanted to read it herself. She reached for the card and almost grabbed it, but was unable to do it. We were so excited with how well she moved her arms and hands, but she just started to cry. She was so frustrated. Then she said, "I just want my legs. I just want my legs." It was one the hardest things to witness. She has been so strong and positive. This was really her first break down. I hate watching her go through this, but I know she has so many things going for her. She will be okay, but she definitely has a long, hard road ahead of her. It was so sad.
She is in much better spirits tonight! She had a visit from her friend Maddi and that always makes her happy. She went outside twice today and did really well with her physical therapy. She even asked for therapy today. Just now Jordan was touching on her legs and she felt it. She could feel really well on her right leg and could even tell he was touching her with his thumb. Her left leg is not quite as good. She can feel pressure, but can't localize. She really is doing so well.
She is going to move to the University of Utah rehab on Monday. She is a little nervous to go, but I think it will be good for her to get started on rehab.
Thanks again for all of the love, support, and prayers. We are so grateful to know that so many people are in Sam's corner! Everyone at the hospital knows who she is. When her friends came last night the security guard knew who she was and said to tell her he was thinking of her. She is definitely making a difference in so many people's lives.
I can't believe how much my testimony has grown in 11 days. I am so thankful for the knowledge I have of my Savior. He truly loves us and is aware of our needs. I continue to be amazed at the miracles we witness everyday.

Good Days

Sam has had a couple of really good days. Her pain is finally under control and she is using a lot less pain medication. My mom said the last two days have been so good. She got a visit from the Spanish Fork softball team last night and it made her day! They brought her a blanket and the jersey she wore when playing for them this summer. I am happy they came to brighten her day!
They decided to wait over the weekend and transfer her to the U of U on Monday. We are excited to get her there, but it might be nice for her to have a couple days of rest before the really hard work starts! She is moving her arms really well and as more feeling in her thighs. She still has an amazing attitude and is just so positive.
I had to work so I haven't seen her in a few days. I am going down to spend the night with her and I am excited to see her. Just being around her strengthens me.
My mom wanted me to again thank everyone for their amazing generosity. She cries when I tell her who has donated money and every time she tells me about someone doing something kind for our family. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful support system. Thanks again!

Another Prayer Answered

My mom wanted me to share this story from last night. Sam was in pain and asked the nurse for some pain medication. She took the pills and they both felt like they got stuck in her throat. She was panicked because she could not get them to come up or go down. She tried drinking and eating and everything to get it down. The nurse left for a moment. Right when she closed the door my mom said a prayer and immediately the pills went down. Sam immediately felt comfortable and quickly fell asleep and had a great night. So many prayers have been answered in so many ways. It is so comforting to know that our Father in Heaven is aware of even something small like this. He has been with Sam throughout this ordeal and I know that he will continue to be by her side. We are so thankful for the power of prayer.

U of U Rehab

Sam was evaluated by someone from the University of Utah rehab unit today. My mom said they were amazing! She said the lady who visited was so fantastic. She was so positive and honest with Sam. She told her that it would be hard and there would be terrible days, but that they were going to help her and that she could make amazing progress. She said that it will be like a full time job. She will be out of her room all day until four, working and doing therapy. She said that Sam will make be with other patients and will become friends with the people she is working with. There is an entire team for neuro rehab and she said that the work is the main doctor's passion. My mom and Sam both loved her. It made my mom really excited for Sam to get started.  I know she will be amazing in rehab. She is an athlete and knows how to work hard to get better. I can't wait for her to get started!
She will probably be transferred sometime this week. Medically she is doing really well. She hasn't been on oxygen all day and her other vital signs are completely stable. She still has a lot of pain at times, but that will still be a problem for a while and won't prevent her from going to rehab.
So many miracles are happening for my amazing sister. I am so happy she is progressing and getting ready to move to the next level of care. Thanks again to everyone for their love and support. Your kindness and generosity is truly being appreciated. We are overwhelmed with how kind people have been. Thanks and we love you all!

sunshine

Sam was a little down earlier this morning but both the MD and I thought it would be nice for her to  a few visitors.  The MD stopped visitors for a few days because he could see Sam concentrating too much on them and not on herself. Her spirits picked up quite a bit with a couple friends. She ate some orange chicken from Panda and had a watermelon slushie from Sonic.  Her friends helped update her facebook.  Part of her therapy today was going outside.  The therapist put her in an adjustable chair and wheeled her outside. I don't think she wanted to go but was glad she did.  Her neck pain has been better controlled today. They have had her in the stiff neck brace.  She will be really glad to get that off in a couple of months. Its almost 8pm and she is resting comfortably.  On a personal note if it weren't for the prayers and support of  many friends and family, this time in our life would be overwhelming.  Although Sam has made progress I hope all of you would continue to ask Heavenly Father for continued blessings in her behalf. I would also request prayers in behalf of all the other patients that need those blessings.  Thank you, Bob (dad)

Feet!

Sam had a good day yesterday. She was really worn out from her physical therapy and slept a lot of the day. Late in the day she mentioned to Jordan that she moved her feet! We all freaked out! My dad couldn't believe that she didn't tell us. She said she was just tired and forgot. But, during physical therapy they were pushing her legs to her chest. They told her to push her feet down and she did it! She couldn't totally feel it, but the therapist told her to keep going because she really was doing it on her own! She also was able to feel when they touched her legs. The left leg she felt every time they touched her. Her right leg wasn't quite as good, but she could feel most of the touch on that leg. She isn't quite able to localize the touch, but we are just so happy that she has any feeling at all.
Medically speaking Sam is doing a lot better. The first few days she was on a levophed drip so her blood pressure did not stay too low. She is off that drip and her blood pressure has been really good. Her lungs are also doing a lot better. She didn't have any oxygen on at all during physical therapy. Later in the day she was on just a little bit and at night they are still having her wear the bipap, but overall her lungs are a lot better.
My mom wanted me to share this story. A few months ago my mom, Kellsi, and Sam were in my mom's bathroom getting ready. As they all stood there Sam noticed how much bigger her neck was and said, "Why is my neck so huge compared to yours?" They just laughed about it. Well, last night Sam told my mom, "Now I know why my neck is so big. It had to be big to protect my spine." It is pretty remarkable that her cord was not severed at all and she is probably right that her big, strong neck did protect it.
The nurse let me take the boys in to see Sam. I had set up Skype and told my mom to see if Sam was ready to see the boys on Skype. She told my mom she just really wished she could see them. So, my mom asked the nurse and he said it would be okay for a few minutes. So, I took them in. I think she loved seeing them and Jackson was SO happy to see her! It was just a short visit, but it was really good for them to see each other.
Sam will probably be leaving the ICU and going to rehab sometime this week. She will likely be moving to the University of Utah rehab. This definitely isn't as convenient for my parents, but the physical therapist said it really is the best rehab and we think that is where my parents insurance will cover. I think she will do so well in rehab. She is such a hard worker and I think it will help her to really start progressing physically.
Sam seems a little bit down yesterday and today. I can't imagine what she is going through emotionally. She is pretty hesitant to talk about things with us so I told my dad to get the social worker in to visit with her. Please continue to keep her in your prayers-for both of her emotional and physical health.

Sam's Room

The night of the accident I could not sleep and I started to read my scriptures. I just opened them randomly to Moroni chapter 7. The entire chapter is wonderful, but verse 22 really hit me- "For behold, God knowing all thing, being from everlasting to everlasting, behold, he sent angels to minister unto the children of men, to make manifest concerning the coming of Christ; and in Christ there should come every good thing." The spirit let me know that angels were indeed with Samantha. I truly believe this. The feeling in her hospital room is so sacred. There is an obvious difference when going from the hallway into her room. She is truly being watched over and protected. Her stake president came to visit and when he left he hugged me and said, "There are good things happening in that room." I think what makes it possible for the spirit to be so strong is Sam. She is so good. She is not angry or bitter. She told my mom she was a little bit sad, but definitely not mad. How amazing is she. I always knew Sam was great, but I did not realize how truly strong her spirit is. I am so thankful that she is allowing the spirit to comfort and strengthen her so we can all feel it as well. I am so thankful for a loving and caring Heavenly Father who is helping all of us through this.

My Point of View

*This is really long and kind of a journal post so I can remember the first few days. There is kind of a lot of detail, so you don't have to read if you don't want to :)*

I thought I would share the story from my point of view to start out and then keep on going with the updates. Tuesday night I was watching TV with Jackson and Alex when I got the call from my mom. I immediately knew something was wrong because my mom was crying. All she said was, "Samantha was in an accident." I wasn't even sure if she was alive for a few moments until my mom was able to compose herself enough to say she was alive. At this point we had no idea what had happened or what type of injuries she had sustained. My mom had called Sam's phone and one of the other girls answered. My mom heard Sam in the background saying, "I can't feel my legs! Am I paralyzed?" I was so freaked out. I wanted to immediately leave for Nephi, but I decided to wait to see what was going on.
About an hour later I got a call from my mom saying that they were life flighting Sam to Utah Valley. At this point things didn't sound too bad. I talked to Jordan on the phone and then tried to go to sleep. I was so anxious, but I was able to sleep for about an hour. Then, Jordan texted me and said to call him right away. I called Jordan and he was sobbing. The neurosurgeon had just told my family that Samantha would probably never walk again. I was so heartbroken. I cried and cried. I couldn't breathe and my heart was racing. I kept trying to sleep, but I just could not. My heart literally hurt and I was just so terrified for my little sister. That was definitely the worst night of my life.
Finally the night ended and I quickly got ready to go to Provo. I was in charge of a baby shower that night and I felt so bad about not having everything ready. I got as much ready as I could and then headed to Utah Valley. I cried for a lot of the drive. I would be okay for a second and then it would hit me again full force. I don't think I have ever prayed harder. I tried to compose myself as I walked to the Surgery waiting room. But, when I saw my mom I lost it. I was so scared and sad and anxious. Sam was about half way through surgery when I arrived. Two nurses came to show us what had been done so far. I went with my dad to see the x-rays. She had fractured C6 and C7, two vertebrae in her neck. They surgeon fused together C5, 6, and 7. After talking to the nurses I took my boys to Jordan and Cindy's apartment. Cindy was so amazing and watched my boys all day so I could be at the hospital. I appreciated it so much.
When I got back to the hospital the surgeon was talking to my family. He said that while the surgery went well things did not look good. He said that the only function she currently had was bicep flexion and wrist flexion. We were devastated. Waiting to see her was one of the hardest times ever. It made me physically ill to think of Sam being unable to walk or use her hands. Many, many tears were shed. My sweet cousin Heather sat by me and rubbed my back and cried with me.
Finally Sam came back from surgery. I did not want to be a mess when I saw her and I physically had to force myself not to cry. It was so good to see her. She was pretty exhausted, but so kind and sweet. She had many visitors throughout the day. She was kind and welcoming to each one. I was amazed at how she could be so positive and upbeat, considering what she had just been through. That night I stayed over with Sam in the hospital. I loved just being able to sit with her-I was just so thankful she was alive.I told her how amazed I was with her. I said, "You could be so grumpy and mean to everyone and you are not. You are so nice!" I asked her if she felt grumpy and she said, "Just a little." She amazes me. The nurse was fabulous and took great care of her. Every two hours they would reposition her and do a neuro check. I think I cried every time they touched her legs and she said she couldn't feel it. It was a hard night, but Sam was able to sleep pretty well.
The next morning I stayed until around 10 and then went to take a short nap. After I napped I got to spend more time with her. I had been such a mess the previous day and I really wanted to be strong for my family and for Sam. I prayed and prayed that I could keep myself more composed. I have never felt prayers so strongly as I did this day. I felt such peace. My prayers were most definitely answered. We had so many friends and family visit this day. It was so wonderful to feel their love and support and to be able to hug them and cry with them. That night I had to go home because I had work the next two days.
Going to work was so hard. I missed Sam and hated not being nearby for immediate updates. But, I love my  job and coworkers and it was nice to be distracted a little bit. Friday night Sam had a rough night. I called my Aunt Connie to check on Sam and was able to talk to the nurse. Sam's oxygen saturation had dropped to the 70s and they had to put her on bipap. The bipap helps her breathe and helps her get oxygen to all parts of her lung. After she was on this she was able to sleep comfortably again. It was hard being away when she was having a hard time.Thankfully, I had confidence in her great nurse (it was the same as the night before when I was there) to give her good care.
I worked Friday and Saturday night and then went to sacrament meeting. I was able to talk to my friend Tracy, my friend Amber, and a couple of my amazing young women. They were so comforting and let me just get it all out. Then, I took a nap and then headed back to Provo to spend time with Sam.
Seeing Sam after two days was fantastic! She looked so good! She was able to stay awake and have an actual conversation. First it was Sam, my dad, Maddie, and me in the room. She was just her normal self-laughing, being sarcastic, and making fun of my dad. It felt so good to see her in such good spirits. After a while Jordan and Cindy joined the party. It really was so wonderful. I loved seeing her be so positive and in less pain. It was definitely a good night.
That pretty much catches you up to right now!
